1. Seed Stratification (Pre-treatment):
-
Place seeds in moist sand or paper towel in a plastic bag.
-
Refrigerate at 1–5°C (34–41°F) for 90–120 days.
-
This cold stratification process mimics natural winter conditions and improves germination rates.
2. Germination:
-
After stratification, plant seeds 1/2 inch deep in seed-starting mix.
-
Keep soil consistently moist and place in a warm, sunny spot (18–24°C or 65–75°F).
-
Germination may take 2–8 weeks.
3. Transplanting Outdoors:
-
Transplant seedlings after the last frost when plants are 4–6 inches tall.
-
Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil.
-
Space vines 6–10 feet apart and provide a trellis or support.
4. Care & Maintenance:
-
Water regularly during dry periods but avoid overwatering.
-
Prune annually during dormancy to encourage fruit production.
-
Fertilize in early spring with balanced fertilizer.
Harvest:
-
Expect fruits in 2–3 years. Harvest when grapes are fully deep purple and sweet.
