This fossilized tooth comes from Carcharocles megalodon, the largest predatory shark to have ever lived, which roamed the oceans during the Miocene to Pliocene epochs, approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago. Measuring about 3 inches, this tooth preserves the classic triangular shape with serrated edges, adapted for slicing through large prey.

Details:

  • Fossil: Megalodon tooth (Carcharocles megalodon)
  • Size: Approximately 3 inches long
  • Appearance: Triangular, serrated tooth with natural fossil coloration, ranging from tan to dark brown
  • Formation: Teeth were shed by living sharks and buried in marine sediments, becoming mineralized over millions of years
  • Physical Properties: Dense fossilized enamel and dentin; retains serration patterns and natural wear from ancient predation
  • Educational Value: Demonstrates the anatomy and feeding adaptations of one of the largest apex predators in Earth’s history, as well as fossilization and mineral replacement processes

This megalodon tooth is a striking and educational specimen, ideal for display or teaching about ancient marine ecosystems and the evolution of sharks.
