Planting and Growing Instructions:
1. When to Plant:
-
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before your last frost date or sow directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
-
For tuber development, plant in early spring for summer flowering.
2. Seed Starting Indoors:
-
Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
-
Maintain soil temperature between 65–70°F (18–21°C).
-
Provide bright light; germination takes 7–14 days.
3. Transplanting:
-
Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors.
-
Space plants 12–18 inches apart in well-drained, fertile soil.
-
Choose a location with full sun (6+ hours daily).
4. Care & Maintenance:
-
Water deeply but allow the soil to dry slightly between watering.
-
Fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a low-nitrogen flower fertilizer.
-
Pinch early growth to promote bushiness.
-
Deadhead regularly to extend blooming.
-
Support tall plants to prevent flopping.
5. Seasonal Notes:
-
In zones 8–11, tubers can overwinter in-ground.
-
In colder zones, dig up tubers after the first frost and store them in a dry, cool place.
